What is CDS?

CDS (Combined Defence Services) is the integral part of Indian Armed Forces that offers a golden opportunity to the candidates looking after to serve the country through the Defence services. CDS entrance exam gives the candidates an opportunity to be a part of either of the academies of Indian Armed Forces namely; OTA (Officers Training Academy), IAFA (Indian Air Force Academy), INA (Indian Naval Academy) and IMA (Indian Military Academy).

Combined Defence Service (CDS) exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) 2 times every year for recruitment to office cadre of the Army, Navy and Air force. CDS exam is conducted generally in the months of May and October.

Candidates qualifying the written test are interviewed by the Service Selection Board (SSB) and if finally selected, depending upon the choice given by the candidates and their merit list ranking, are sent to one of the following institutes for orientation training :-

  • ♦ Indian Military Academy (IMA) ; Dehradun
  • ♦ Indian Naval Academy; Ezhimala
  • ♦ Air Force Academy; Hyderabad
  • ♦ Officers Training Academy (OTA); Chennai. For both Men and Women
Eligibility Criteria
Indian Military Academy
Age 19-24 Years
Educational Qualifications Degree of a recognized University or equivalent
Papers English + General Knowledge + Elementary Mathematics = 300 Marks
Indian Naval Academy
Age 19-22 Years
Educational Qualifications B.Sc. with Physics & Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering.
Papers English + General Knowledge + Elementary Mathematics = 300 Marks
Air Force Academy
Age 19-23 Years
Educational Qualifications B.Sc. with Physics and/or Mathematics or Bachelor of Engineering.
Papers English + General Knowledge + Elementary Mathematics = 300 Marks
Officers Training Academy
Age 19-25 Years
Educational Qualifications Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.
Papers English + General Knowledge = 200 Marks
Syllabus For CDS Written Exam

The CDS written exam tests the candidates in diverse fields like English, History, Polity, Economics, Geography, Math, Life Science, Physics, Chemistry, Current Affairs, GK, etc. For OTA exam, syllabus is the same as CDS expect, OTA candidates do not have to sit for mathematics paper. Results of CDS Written Exam

UPSC declares the result of CDS/OTA written exam in 3-4 months after the written exam. The same can be viewed on the UPSC website. Being a competitive exam and there is no fixed cut off percentage for passing. Candidates who perform better are sent the call letters for SSB interviews. The final merit list is prepared after the SSB interviews final result and displayed on the UPSC website. Joining instructions are sent to students based on vacancies available as per the merit list.
